The Past and Present of Face-based Payment

In July 2013, Finnish company Uniqul launched and piloted the world's first facial recognition-based payment system.

Uniqul tried to use face payment to solve the risk and dispute about using mobile payment in the gas station and improve payment convenience. In addition, Uniqul also envisions the future form of face payment in supermarkets, clothing stores, airports, and other scenarios.

In 2015, Jack Ma first showed face payment in Germany Hanover IT expo (CeBIT), which shook the world. However, it is hard to face payment to get out of the Demo stage as there were no large-scale commercial cases at that time.

On September 1, 2017, KFC’s KPRO restaurant introduced a non-removable self-service ordering kiosk equipped with Alipay face payment function. This is the first commercial trial of face payment around the world.

On Aug.15, 2018, Alipay announced the official commercialization of face payment during Ant Financial Open Day in China. At the same time, Alipay promised that it will popularize the solution of self-checkout + face payment to all kinds of business scenarios in the coming year.

In November 2018, Alibaba Future Hotel, the first hotel in the world to support face check-in was officially opened.

On December 13, 2018, Alipay cooperated with Telpo to create a new face payment product -- "Dragonfly", which reduced 80% face payment access cost and was well received by merchants.

In 2019, Telpo collaborated with Burger King to build a face payment self-service order kiosk to improve order efficiency in stores, reducing labor costs and increase profits by more than three times.
